What the heck is FODMAP?

FODMAP is an acronym that stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols. These are a group of carbohydrates and sugar alcohols that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine, leading to digestive symptoms such as bloating, gas, and diarrhea in some people.

The low FODMAP diet is a dietary approach that restricts the intake of high FODMAP foods to reduce these symptoms in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or other digestive disorders. The diet involves avoiding or limiting high FODMAP foods such as certain fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products, and sweeteners, and replacing them with low FODMAP alternatives.

It's important to note that the low FODMAP diet is not a long-term solution, and should only be followed under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Additionally, not everyone with IBS or other digestive disorders will benefit from the low FODMAP diet, so it's important to work with a healthcare professional to determine if it's right for you.
